How To Choose The Right Beard For Your Face Shape

Everyone has a distinct face shape and they come in a variety of different sizes.  This means the beard your best friend rocks as an Oval face may not look the best on you!

How Do You Determine Your Face Shape?

Face shapes are generally determined based on a few facial characteristics, such as the your face length, jawline and forehead, so grab a flexible tape measure or a piece of string (to measure against a ruler after) and follow our guidelines below:

Measure the following:

  1. Forehead: Pull the tape measure from the peak of one eyebrow arch to the peak of the opposite arch.

    2. Cheekbones: Measure across your face at the upper cheeks, starting and ending at the sharp bump below the outer corner of each eye.

    3. Jawline: Measure your jaw across your face at its widest point (about an inch down from your ears).

    4. Face length: Measure from the center of your hairline to the tip of your chin.

Write down these four measurements and note which number is the largest.  You will use these measurements to determine your face shape below!

Oblong: Face length is largest.  Forehead, cheekbones, and jawline are similar in size.

Oval: Face length is larger than the width of the cheekbones, and forehead is larger than the jawline. The angle of the jaw is rounded.

Square: All measurements are fairly similar. The angle of the jaw is sharp.

Rectangle:  Face length is most likely the longest with similar forehead and cheekbones.  Will have a strong jawline and a wider chin.

Diamond: Face length is largest. Then, in descending order: cheekbones, forehead, and smallest is jawline. The chin is pointed.

Triangular: Large jawline, smaller cheekbones, and smallest forehead. Face can be any length.

How Do You Determine Your Beard Shape?

Now that you’ve found your face shape, its time to look at the best beard styles that suit you!  When it comes to picking the right beard shape, always remember the following golden rule: Your beard and your jaw should work in tandem to achieve a nicely graduated, oval shape.  If you have a square or rounded jaw, you will want to grow your beard fuller on the bottom to elongate your face.  If you already have an oblong or rectangular face, you will want to grow more hair on the sides while avoiding length beneath the chin.

So which beard shape bests matches you?

The Oblong Face:

The oblong face shape is very close to the oval face shape, however it is a little longer and narrower.  Due to the face being the most elongated out of all face shapes, drawing attention to the sides of the face are highly suggested.  This is where having a Mutton Chops bear style is recommended.

The Oval Face:

The oval face shape tends to have a wider chin and forehead, giving the face its soft, curved lines and creating the ovular illusion.  Known as the middle ground between the other face shapes, most beard styles will work well if you have an oval face shape. It is still suggested to grow a Goatee with a little hair on the bottom of the chin, keeping it shorter on the sides.

The Square Face:

The rectangular face shape tends to exhibit features from both the square and oblong face, yet it appears longer and less wide than the others.  The primary difference is that the rectangular face shape is more angular and has squared-off features. Since this face shape is already quite long, you can go ahead and rock a full beard or extended goatee, just remember to keep the sides of the beard style longer and the bottom shorter.

The Rectangular Face:

The square face shape has exceptionally angular features, with a prominent chin, broader forehead, and a strong jawline.  If this is your face shape, you will want to keep the hair at the chin longer and fuller, with shorter to no hair on the sides.  Try rocking a goatee and mustache combo but avoid growing a full beard, as it will not suit your face shape the best.

The Diamond Face:

The diamond face shape is noted for its narrow pointed chin and high cheekbones.  Those with a diamond face shape tend to have a narrow hairline at the top, creating the illusion of a diamond.  Men with this face shape can rock almost anything from a full beard to a goatee or the chinstrap and mustache.

The Triangle Face:

The triangle face shape has a slimmer forehead and a wider, squarer jaw and chin.  The hairline has a lot to do with this face shape, as those with a curving hairline that comes to a point often have more triangular features.  The best beard styles for this face shape are a goatee or a chin strap and mustache.
